Stop trying to 'fix' Windows!
This is not a leveled or objective take. This is me putting up with Windows at work and realizing how horrible things are.
If you browse YouTube for long enough, you might come across videos promising to "fix" Windows 11 with "debloat scripts" and magic PowerShell tweaks. Weird custom ISOs and versions of Windows that have huge chunks allegedly stripped out. I'm here to tell you this is horrible and it's not providing any kind of benefit to you whatsoever.
You are not getting better gaming performance or whatever
There is no measurable difference in performance between a "debloated" Windows system and one running with all bells and whistles. Modern operating systems utilize proper CPU scheduling to ensure your games run smoothly either way.
You are not getting proper security updates
Here are some of the things you lose out on by using stale/"performance tweaked" versions of Windows:
-
VBS-based hardening https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/device-experiences/oem-vbs
-
HVCI support https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/bringup/device-guard-and-credential-guard
-
Windows Defender rules
-
Windows Sandbox improvements
You are trying to push a boulder up a hill
By using somebody's "tweaked" Windows on the Internet, you're putting all your trust in them and still constantly living in fear that a concurrent feature update from Microsoft will wipe all those settings away. You will always be fighting Windows and will never get it to be the way you want.
Just use fucking Linux
If you're at a point where you are technically minded enough to aggressively tweak and modify your operating system, or even install it frequently, you are the perfect audience for a desktop Linux distro. Use something secure like Fedora and stop making your life difficult. With a Linux distro, you can actually have a "debloated" experience without the cruft you don't like.
